Here is a beautiful little book that I want to show you. I wish the book would be bound in birch bark. I wish it would smell of fresh birch leaves and sap when you open it. That would be just the right contrast for this very stylized and graphic little jewel…

Sanna Annukka was born in Brighton UK to a Finnish mother and a British father. She spent many childhood summers with her mother’s family in nortern Finland, where she learnt to love the Finnish landscape and culture. Her work is very influenced by the the magic qualities of the Lapland wilderness and Finnish folklore, especially the Sami people. Having spent so many summers in Finland myself with my maternal relatives I feel a very close affinity with her strong, clear graphic style and her bold colors. Her work takes me back to the magic forests of Finland and the stories of Kalevala. Just look at some of my Kalevala Koru Jewellery: They are readaptations of old Finnish bronzes excavated in the distant past, and inspired by the very soul of Finnish spirit: the Kalevala epos. They are also soulmates to Annukka’s design…
